My poetry was lousy you said 내 가사는 별로 좋지않다고 네가 말했지
Where are you calling from? 어디서 전화하는 거니?
A booth in the midwest 서부 중간쯤에서의 전화부스니?
Ten years ago 십년 전에
I bought you some cufflinks 난 네게 커프스 단추를 사줬지
You brought me something 너도 네가 뭔가를 줬어
We both know what memories can bring 우리 둘 다 어떤 기억을 가져올 런지 알지
They bring diamonds and rust 다이아몬드(사랑)와 녹슨 것(이별)을 가져오지

Already a legend 이미 내게 전설같은 존재야
The unwashed phenomenon 절대 지워지지 않는 기억
The original vagabond 타고난 방랑자이지
You strayed into my arms 넌 내 팔을 비집고 들어오지
And there you stayed 그리고 넌 그쯤에서 머물렀지
Temporarily lost at sea 바다에서 잠시동안 길을 잃은거야
The Madonna was yours for free 마돈나(마리아)는 아무런 댓가도 바라지않고 네 편이었지
Yes the girl on the half-shell 그래 조개껍질을 반쪽만 쓴 여인이
Would keep you unharmed 너를 안전하게 지켜줄거야
Now I see you standing 바닥에 떨어진 갈색잎들 위에
With brown leaves falling around 서있는 네가 보여
And snow in your hair 네 머리엔 눈이 묻었네
Now you're smiling out the window 넌 워싱턴 광장의 싸구려 호텔의
Of that crummy hotel 창밖에서 웃음짓고 있어
Over Washington Square
Our breath comes out white clouds  우리의 숨이  하얀 구름이 되고
Mingles and hangs in the air 뭉게뭉게 떠올라 공기중에  섞이지
Speaking strictly for me  내가 엄밀히 말하자면
We both could have died then and there 우리 둘 다 그 자리에서 죽을 수도 있었어

Now you're telling me 넌 내게 말하지
You're not nostalgic 넌 그립지 않다고
Then give me another word for it 그럼 그 순간을  다른 말로 해봐
You who are so good with words 넌 참 말을 잘하지
And at keeping things vague 그리고 일을 모호하게 유지하지
Because I need some of that vagueness now  sorpeh 그런 모호함이 필요해 지금은
It's all come back too clearly 모든 추억이  너무 선명하게 살아나기 때문이지
Yes I loved you dearly 그래 난 널 진심으로 사랑했어
And if you're offering me diamonds and rust 만일 네가 내게  다이아몬드와 녹슨 것을 제안한다면
I've already paid 난 이미 값(둘 다)을 치른거야

  "Diamonds and  Rust"
  사랑과 이별
  다이아몬드는 빛나는 보석입니다. 즉,사랑을 할 때는 모든 것이 반짝 반짝 빛이 나고 신이 납니다.
  하지만, 이별을 하면  모든 것이  녹슬어 빛이 나지 않고 허무하다는 표현을 한 것으로
  제목을 정한 것 같습니다. 한 때는 연인으로서 동지로서 같은 목적을 추구하면서 같은 길을 걸었지만                                                 
  
  어느 순간,서로의 의견이 엇갈려 다른 길을 걸으며
  한동안  잊고 지내다가 불현듯 옛추억이 되살아나서 존 바에즈가 곡을 쓴 것으로 보입니다.
